Abstract
The first appearance and development of the nails were studied in 80 embryos and fetuses between the 2nd and 9th mth of development. The initial development of the primary nail fold can be observed in embryos after 8 to 10 wk of intrauterine life. The nail plate itself begins to develop early in the 5th mth. In the 7th mth, the nail plate breaks through the cuticle, exposing the dorsal surface of nail. By the end of the 9th mth, the nail is fully mature, and projects beyond the pulp.
