First periodic EEG phenomena in an 8-year-old boy with proven SSPE consisted of generalized fast waves (PGFWs) concurrent with periodic involuntary movements. Since the great variability and unspecificity of EEG changes in the early stage of SSPE could make diagnostic difficulties, the appearance of PGFW in a patient with a clinical picture reminiscent of SSPE should always prompt immunologic investigations aimed at the confirmation of this disease. © 1986.
