Previous research has indicated that it may be associated with other mental health problems, such as dysthymic mood and narcissistic behavior. In our study, we tested the existence and strength of relationship between Internet addiction, self-esteem and narcissism in a student population. On a sample of 244 students, we also investigated social networking activities, such as number of self-portrait photographs (“selfies”), and their potential connection with self-esteem and narcissism. Each participant completed a questionnaire consisting of Young Internet Addiction Test, Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale, and Narcissistic Personality Inventory. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between internet addiction score and self-esteem. Internet addiction increased as self-esteem decreased and vice versa. On the other hand, there was a positive correlation between internet addiction and narcissism. NPI score and number of self-portrait photographs (selfies) on Facebook were also in a positive relationship. Conversely, NPI score increased as the self-esteem decreased. The results of the study are in accordance with our previous findings on Internet use and mental health, confirming that Internet addiction is a potentially a serious public health problem. © 2017 Elsevier B.V. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

This study was designed to evaluate antioxidant activity in hypertensive patients and to assess the relationship between oxidative stress and exercise tolerance in hypertensive patients with mild left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD). A total of 42 patients, aged 51±9 years, with a long history of hypertension and mild LVDD (mitral flow velocities-E/A 1, deceleration time of E >220 ms, and preserved ejection fraction-EF >50%), and 30 controls without cardiovascular disease, aged 50±7 years, underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). Peak oxygen uptake (peak VO2 ), oxygen pulse (VO2/heart rate (HR)) and ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT) were obtained during CPET. Antioxidant activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase in the blood was measured before and after exercise. Reduced peak VO2 (1715±426 vs. 2083±465 ml min -1, P(0.001), VO 2/HR (12.0±2.8 vs. 14.6±3.3 ml per beat, P(0.001) and percentage of peak VO2 at VAT (55.5±15.8% vs. 64.5±14.7%, P 0.007) were observed in hypertensive patients, compared with controls. Antioxidant protection was significantly attenuated in hypertensive patients, compared with controls, before (945 vs. 1006, P=0.012) and after exercise (954 vs. 1051, P=0.001). The level of SOD before and after exercise was significantly associated with LVDD in hypertensive patients (P=0.012 and 0.02, respectively). In addition, the degree of LVDD before exercise (E/A) influenced the degree of exercise capability (peak VO2 ) (P0.016). Asymptomatic hypertensive patients with mild LVDD had reduced cardiopulmonary capacity, accurately identified by CPET. The redox state in hypertensive patients was significantly related to LVDD and exercise tolerance. The direct influence of sympathetic activity and other control mechanisms, especially at an increased HR, is not well understood. The objectives of the study were to investigate the influence of increasing HR on the properties of heartbeat interval (RR) series in young healthy subjects. ECG was recorded in 9 trained and 11 untrained young men during supine rest, standing, incremental running exercise and relaxation. During exercise, a breath-to-breath gas exchange was monitored. The RR time series analysis included the spectral analysis, detrended fluctuations analysis method and sample entropy (SampEn) calculation. During exercise, spectral powers were reduced dramatically in both groups. The dependence of short-term scaling exponent (α1) on the RR included a characteristic maximum, while SampEn for the same value of the RR had a minimum. The value of HR corresponding to the maximum of α1 and minimum of SampEn (IHR) corresponded to the intrinsic HR obtained by an autonomic blockade. In trained subjects, the curves α1 versus RR and SampEn versus RR were moved toward larger RR, compared with control. For HR values higher than IHR, α1 decreased and SampEn increased. These results reveal that the complexity of the heart rhythm above intrinsic HR decreases with an increase in HR. We suggest that at the highest HR intrinsic heart control is reflected in the heart rhythm. However, data are scarce on the efffects of short-term exercise programs in patients with acute MI treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). AIM: To evaluate the effect of short-term exercise training on cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) parameters in patients suffering acute MI treated with PPCI. STUDY DESIGN: Observational longitudinal study. SETTING: Inpatient cardiac rehabilitation. POPULATION: Sixty consecutive patients with MI treated with PPCI referred for rehabilitation. METHODS: We studied 60 consecutive patients with MI treated with PPCI reffered for rehabilitation to our institution. The study population consisted of 54 men and 6 women (age 52.0±8.4 years, left ventricular ejection fraction 54.1±8.1%), who participated in a 3-week clinical cardiac rehabilitation program. The program consisted of cycling for 7 times/week, and daily walking for 45 minutes at an intensity of 70-80% of the individual maximal heart rate. All patients performed symptom-limited CPET on a bicycle ergometer with a ramp protocol of 10 w/min. The CPET was also performed after cardiac rehabilitation programs. RESULTS: After 3 weeks of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation program improved exercise tolerance as compared to baseline (peak workload 119.28±20.45 vs. 104.35±22.01 watts, respectively, P<0.001), as well as peak respiratory exchage ratio (1.10±0.14 vs. 1.04±0.01, respectively, P<0.001). Peak heart rate at rest, peak and after 1 minute of rest were also improved. Most importantly, peak V02 (19.27±4.16 vs. 17.27±3.34 ml/kg/min, respectively, P<0.001), peak VC02 (1.83±0.38 vs. 1.58±0.30, respectively, P<0.001), peak ventilatory exchange (53.73Ü2.47 vs. 45.50±11.32 L/min, respectively, P<0.001) and peak breathing reserve (55.20±12.36 vs. 60.18±14.19%, respectively, P<0.001) were also improved. No major adverse cardiac events were noted during the rehabilitation program. CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that short-term exercise training in patients with acute MI treated with PPCI is safe and improves functional capacity, as well as test duration, work load and heart rate response. Twenty-two professional male soccer players volunteered to participate in the study. The players were allocated to two assigned trials ingesting carbohydrate-electrolyte drink (7% carbohydrates, sodium 24 mmol.l-1, chloride 12 mmol.l -1, potassium 3 mmol.l-1) or placebo during a 90 min on-field soccer match. The trials were matched for subjects' age, weight, height and maximal oxygen uptake. Immediately after the match, players completed four soccer-specific skill tests. Blood glucose concentration (mean±SD) was higher at the end of the match-play in the carbohydrate-electrolyte trial than in the placebo trial (4.4±0.3 vs. 4.0±0.3 mmol.l-1, P < 0.05). Subjects in the carbohydrate-electrolyte trial finished the specific dribble test faster in comparison with subjects in the placebo trial (12.9±0.4 vs. 13.6±0.5 s, P < 0.05). Ratings of the precision test were higher in the carbohydrate-electrolyte trial as compared to the placebo trial (17.2±4.8 vs. 15.1±5.2, P < 0.05) but there were no differences in coordination test and power test results between trials. The main finding of the present study indicates that supplementation with carbohydrate-electrolyte solution improved soccer-specific skill performance and recovery after an on-field soccer match compared with ingestion of placebo. The aim of this study was to assess the complex relationship between sarcopenia, malnutrition, cognitive impairment, physical activity, and depression in the elderly, with the potential role of quality of life as a mediator in these associations. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample (n = 298) of elderly patients admitted to Special Hospital for Rehabilitation “Termal”, Vrdnik, Serbia. Sarcopenia, the risk for malnutrition, cognitive impairment, physical activity, quality of life, and depressive symptoms were measured by standardized instruments. Additional data included sociodemographic characteristics. Simultaneous assessment of the direct and indirect relationships of all determinants was performed by path analysis. Results: A total of 40% (n = 120) of the elderly were diagnosed with sarcopenia, and 42.6% had depression symptoms. The risk of malnutrition was present in 23.5%, cognitive impairment in 5.4%, and a low level of physical activity was reported in 26.2% of elderly participants. The mean reported quality of life measured by Sarcopenia and Quality of Life Questionnaire was 60 (on the scale ranging from 0 to 100; where a higher score reflects a higher quality of life). The best-fitted model (χ2/DF = 1.885, NFI = 0.987, CFI = 0.993, GFI = 0.997, RMSEA = 0.055) highlighted the mediating effect of quality of life between sarcopenia, malnutrition, cognitive impairment, lower level of physical activities and depression. According to the model, quality of life was a direct negative predictor of depressive symptoms in the elderly, while malnutrition positively affected depression. Conclusions: The presented path model may assist rehabilitation centers in developing strategies to screen for sarcopenia and risk of malnutrition, and promote physical activity in elderly, aiming to prevent their negative effects on mental health. The aim of this study was to assess the complex relationship between sarcopenia, malnutrition, cognitive impairment, physical activity, and depression in the elderly, with the potential role of quality of life as a mediator in these associations. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample (n = 298) of elderly patients admitted to Special Hospital for Rehabilitation “Termal”, Vrdnik, Serbia. Sarcopenia, the risk for malnutrition, cognitive impairment, physical activity, quality of life, and depressive symptoms were measured by standardized instruments. Additional data included sociodemographic characteristics. Simultaneous assessment of the direct and indirect relationships of all determinants was performed by path analysis. Results: A total of 40% (n = 120) of the elderly were diagnosed with sarcopenia, and 42.6% had depression symptoms. The risk of malnutrition was present in 23.5%, cognitive impairment in 5.4%, and a low level of physical activity was reported in 26.2% of elderly participants. The mean reported quality of life measured by Sarcopenia and Quality of Life Questionnaire was 60 (on the scale ranging from 0 to 100; where a higher score reflects a higher quality of life). The best-fitted model (χ2/DF = 1.885, NFI = 0.987, CFI = 0.993, GFI = 0.997, RMSEA = 0.055) highlighted the mediating effect of quality of life between sarcopenia, malnutrition, cognitive impairment, lower level of physical activities and depression. According to the model, quality of life was a direct negative predictor of depressive symptoms in the elderly, while malnutrition positively affected depression. Conclusions: The presented path model may assist rehabilitation centers in developing strategies to screen for sarcopenia and risk of malnutrition, and promote physical activity in elderly, aiming to prevent their negative effects on mental health. A total of 274 elite male Caucasian athletes were randomly selected from the larger sample and divided into two groups: adolescent (group Y) and adult athletes (≥18 years; group A). They performed maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing on a treadmill. Heart rate recovery was calculated as the rate of decline of HR from peak exercise to rates 1, 2 and 3 min after cessation of exercise (HRR1, HRR2 and HRR3). A significantly higher HRR1 was found in group A (29·5 ± 15·6 versus 22·4 ± 10·8, P<0·001), but HRR3 was higher in group Y (82·7 ± 10·2 versus 79·9 ± 12·25; P = 0·04). Stepwise multivariate linear regression analysis showed that, among all subjects, the HRR1 alone was independently associated with age (P<0·001). The maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max) was in a negative relationship with HRR1 and in a positive one with HRR3 (P<0·05) with respect to all athletes. The HRR during 3 min postexercise should be reported for the purpose of better assessing functional adaptation to exercise among elite athletes as well as the age-associated differences in recovery. Results: a higher percentage of boys were highly active, while a higher percentage of girls were scarcely active (χ2 [2, n = 5017] = 151.4, p < 0.01). Decline in physical activity with age was higher in girls than in boys (χ2 [6, n = 5409] = 90.4, p < 0.01). MANOVA revealed a significant effect of gender (V = 0.009, F [6, 3669] = 5.29, p < 0.01), nutritional status (V = 0.193, F [12, 7340] = 65.16, p < 0.01) and physical activity levels (V = 0.043, F [12, 7340] = 13.60, p < 0.01) on tests outcomes. Conclusions: our study has shown that activity level in Serbian schoolchildren declines with age and is affected by nutritional status. We determined plasma and erythrocyte phospholipid FA status of professional basketball and football players. Our results showed differences in plasma FA profile not only between sportsmen and sedentary subjects, but also between two groups of sportsmen. Plasma FA profile in basketball players showed significantly higher proportion of n-6 FA (20:3, 20:4, and 22:4) and total polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) than controls, while football players had higher palmitoleic acid (16:1) than basketball players and controls. Total PUFA and 22:4 were also higher in basketball than in football players. Erythrocyte FA profile showed no differences between football players and controls. However, basketball players had higher proportion of 18:0 than controls, higher saturated FA and lower 18:2 than two other groups, and higher 22:4 than football players. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving elite male athletes (N = 150; mean age, 21 ± 4 years) engaging in one of four different sports, classified according to the type and intensity of exercise involved. All athletes underwent full anthropometric assessment and pulmonary function testing (spirometry). Results: Across all age groups and sport types, the elite athletes showed spirometric values that were significantly higher than the reference values. We found that the values for FVC, FEV1, vital capacity, and maximal voluntary ventilation were higher in water polo players than in players of the other sports evaluated (p < 0.001). In addition, PEF was significantly higher in basketball players than in handball players (p < 0.001). Most anthropometric/ demographic parameters correlated significantly with the spirometric parameters evaluated. We found that BMI correlated positively with all of the spirometric parameters evaluated (p < 0.001), the strongest of those correlations being between BMI and maximal voluntary ventilation (r = 0.46; p < 0.001). Conversely, the percentage of body fat correlated negatively with all of the spirometric parameters evaluated, correlating most significantly with FEV1 (r = −0.386; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our results suggest that the type of sport played has a significant impact on the physiological adaptation of the respiratory system. That knowledge is particularly important when athletes present with respiratory symptoms such as dyspnea, cough, and wheezing. Because sports medicine physicians use predicted (reference) values for spirometric parameters, the risk that the severity of restrictive disease or airway obstruction will be underestimated might be greater for athletes. © 2015 Sociedade Brasileira de Pneumologia e Tisiologia.
