    Association between GPX1 and SOD2 genetic polymorphisms and overall survival in patients with metastatic urothelial bladder cancer: a single-center study in Serbia

    Purpose: Urothelial bladder cancer (UBC) is the most common malignancy of urinary tract in the developed world. In metastatic UBC, systemic chemotherapy still remains the mainstay of initial treatment. Inter-individual differences in treatment outcome partially may be the consequence of genetic variations in enzymes that modulate oxidative stress. Therefore, we aimed to determine the potential prognostic role of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the two antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1) and superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) in metastatic UBC patients treated with cisplatin-based chemotherapy. Methods: This prospective single-center hospital-based case-control study included 33 patients with metastatic UBC treated with cisplatin-based chemotherapy and 227 healthy controls. GPX1 SNP (rs1050450) was assessed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), and SOD2 SNP (rs4880) was determined by quantitative PCR (q-PCR). Overall survival (OS) was evaluated using Kaplan–Meier survival analysis during 2-year follow up period, with the log-rank test for prognostic significance. Results: No significant difference was observed in the distributions of GPX1 and SOD2 gene variants between patients and controls (p>0.05). Regarding GPX1 polymorphism, no impact of GPX1 polymorphism on OS could be demonstrated (p>0.05). Finally, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed no association between SOD2 polymorphism and OS (p>0.05). Conclusions: No association was found between polymorphism of GPX1 and SOD2 and OS in patients with metastatic urothelial bladder cancer treated with cisplatin-based chemotherapy. © 2018 Zerbinis Publications.     Bladder cancer after managing upper urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma: Risk factors and survival

    Objective To identify independent risk factors for the development of bladder cancer after surgical management of upper urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma (UUT-TCC). Patients and methods Between January 1999 and December 2008, 154 patients were treated surgically for UUT-TCC at the Clinic of Urology, Clinical Center of Serbia. Patients with a previous history of bladder cancer and patients with concomitant bladder cancer were excluded from the study. In all, 92 patients were then available for evaluation. The median follow-up after surgery was 39.5 months. Univariate and multivariate analyses using the logistic regression model were performed. The intravesical disease-free rate and survival were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and the log-rank test was used to determine statistical differences. Results and limitations In this study, 21.7% patients treated for UUT-TCC developed subsequent bladder tumors. Tumor multifocality was the only independent predictor associated with the development of subsequent bladder cancer (P = 0.028, RR = 3.52). Intravesical recurrence-free survival rates for these 92 patients at 1, 3, 5, and 7 years were 85.8, 80, 79.3, and 78.3%, respectively. Patients with tumors extending to multiple sites were significantly more likely to present subsequent intravesical recurrence (P = 0.006). The development of bladder cancer had no significant effect on the survival of patients who underwent surgical treatment of UUT-TCC, compared to patients without bladder cancer development (P = 0.660). Neither did the type of surgery mode affect patient survival (P = 0.245). This study is limited by biases associated with its retrospective design. Conclusion The multiplicity of the UUT-TCC is an independent risk factor for the occurrence of bladder cancer. © Springer Science+Business Media, B.V. 2011.

    Purpose: To translate, culturally adapt and validate the Coronary Revascularisation Outcome Questionnaire (CROQ), a disease-specific tool for measuring health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with ischaemic heart disease (IHD), into Serbian language (CROQ-S). Methods: Validation study was performed at the Clinic for Cardiac Surgery and Clinic for Cardiology, University Clinical Centre of Serbia. We included a convenience sample of 600 patients with IHD divided into four groups. Acceptability, reliability and validity of the CROQ-S were assessed. Results: CROQ-S was acceptable to patients as demonstrated by less than 1% of missing data for each single item. Cronbach's Alpha was higher than the criterion of 0.70 for all scales in each version except the Cognitive Functioning scale which only met this criterion in the CABG pre-revascularisation version. Mean values of item-total correlations were greater than 0.30 for all scales except the Cognitive Functioning scale in both the pre-revascularisation groups. Compared to the original version, exploratory factor analysis in our study showed more factors; however, the majority of items had a factor loading greater than 0.3 on the right scale. Correlations of CROQ-S scales with the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey and Seattle Angina Questionnaire showed the expected pattern whereby scales measuring similar constructs were most highly correlated. Conclusion: CROQ-S is an acceptable, reliable and valid disease-specific instrument for measuring HRQoL in this sample of Serbian speaking patients with IHD both before and after coronary revascularisation. However, the Cognitive Functioning scale did not meet all the psychometric criteria and further validation of its responsiveness is required. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

    Background and Objectives: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) impacts 4–50% of adult women, frequently resulting in embarrassment, diminished self-esteem, and social withdrawal, significantly affecting quality of life. The aim of our study is to cross-culturally adapt and validate the Urinary Incontinence Outcome Questionnaire (IOQ) for the Serbian population and to assess the multifaceted impact of SUI on the quality of life among women. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study involved a total of 150 women: 100 undergoing surgical management for SUI (ST group) and 50 receiving non-surgical treatments, including vaginal estrogen, pessaries, electrical stimulation, or collagen fillers (NST group). The participants completed questionnaires on demographics, fatigue (MFI), anxiety and depression (HADS), and quality of life (SF-36), as well as the IOQ. Results: The ST group had a mean age of 60.0 ± 10.0 years, with 65% married, 65% with secondary education, 62% non-smokers, and 78% with comorbid conditions, primarily cardiovascular disease (59%). The NST group showed similar characteristics, with a significant difference in cardiovascular comorbidity (p = 0.049). All IOQ subscales demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach alpha > 0.7), except for the subscale Complications (Cronbach alpha = 0.440). The IOQ score for “Symptoms pre-operative” had the highest mean value (62.8 ± 18.6), while “Hospital Re-admission” had the lowest (303 ± 17.1). A comparison of the SF-36 scores showed significant differences in the Energy (p = 0.025) and Emotional well-being (p = 0.015) domains between the ST and NST groups. Conclusions: The Serbian version of the IOQ has been validated, demonstrating psychometric features that endorse its application in clinical and research contexts. This study highlights the significant impact of SUI on quality of life and the need for a comprehensive approach to treatment. The results emphasize the importance of addressing both the physical and psychological aspects of SUI to improve the lives of affected women. © 2025 by the authors.

    Diagnostic and prognostic impact of preoperative thrombocytosis in muscle invasive bladder cancer: Any role in clinical practice?

    Background: Since earlier research suggested a link between preoperative thrombocytosis and poor oncological outcomes in several cancers, the significance of platelet count abnormalities in bladder carcinoma (BC) demands for further investigation. Objective: To assess the prognostic value of preoperative thrombocytosis (PTC) on survival in patients with bladder carcinoma treated by radical cystectomy (RC). Patients and Methods: Analytical cohort comprised a single-center series of 299 patients who underwent RC for bladder carcinoma was evaluated. A platelet count beyond the threshold of 400 × 109/L was considered thrombocytosis. Along with the Kaplan–Meier survival probability, cox proportional hazard regression models were used. Results: Twenty-eight (9.4%) patients had preoperative thrombocytosis. PTC was associated with gender, tumor stage, tumor grade, lymphovascular invasion, hydronephrosis, anemia (p < 0.001), and hypoalbuminemia (p < 0.001). Preoperative thrombocytosis was strongly linked to worse overall survival (OS) (p = 0.002), and cancer specific survival (CSS) (p = 0.004), according to the Kaplan–Meier method. Throughout the follow-up, a total of 198 (66.2%) patients died, including 170 (56.9%) from BC. For this study population 5-year CSS was 45.8%. Preoperative thrombocytosis was not independently associated with OS (HR 1.168; 95% CI 0.740–1.844; p = 0.504) or CSS (HR 1.060; 95% CI 0.649–1.730; p = 0.816) in multivariate Cox regression analysis. Only tumor stage (HR 2.558; 95% CI 1.675–3.908; p < 0.001), hydronephrosis (HR 1.614; 95% CI 1.173–2.221; p = 0.003), lymph node metastasis (HR 1.555; 95% CI 1.076–2-2.248; p = 0.019), anemia (HR 1.454; 95% CI 1.034–2.046; p = 0.032) and ASA grade (HR 1.375; 95% CI 1.006–1.879; p = 0.046) were independently associated with CSS. Conclusions: In a single-center study of consecutive patients who underwent radical cystectomy for bladder cancer, preoperative thrombocytosis was unable to predict outcomes. © 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

    Background and Objectives: One of the most frequent genetic alterations reported to date in prostate cancer (PC) is aberrant methylation of glutathione transferase P1 (GSTP1). Taking into consideration the involvement of oxidative stress in PC pathogenesis and recent advances in scientific understanding of the role of GSTP1*Ala114Val rs1138272 polymorphism in carcinogenesis, we hypothesized that this single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) influences the risk of PC independently of, or in combination with, other GST polymorphisms, including GSTP1*IIe105Val rs1695 or GSTM1 and GSTT1 deletion polymorphisms. Materials and Methods: Genotyping was performed in 237 PC cases and in 236 age-matched controls by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for deletion of GST polymorphisms and by quantitative PCR for SNPs. Results: We found that carriers of either GSTP1*Val (rs1138272) or GSTP1*Val (rs1695) variant alleles had a PC risk compared to individuals with both referent alleles (OR = 4.93, 95%CI: 2.89–8.40, p < 0.001 and OR = 1.8, 95%CI: 1.19–2.73, p = 0.006, respectively). Additionally, in a haplotype analysis we found that individuals with GSTP1*C haplotype, represented by both variant alleles (GSTP1*Val rs1695 + GSTP1*Val rs1138272), had a 5.46 times higher risk of PC development compared to individuals with the most frequent haplotype (95%CI = 2.56–11.65, p < 0.001), suggesting a potential role of those variants in PC susceptibility. A regression analysis on the number of risk-associated alleles per individual (GSTM1*active, GSTT1*null, GSTP1*Val rs1695 and GSTP1*Val rs1138272) showed a significant increase in the risk of developing PC, from 3.65-fold in carriers of two risk alleles (95%CI = 1.55–8.61, p = 0.003) to an approximately 12-fold increase in carriers of all four risk alleles (95%CI = 3.05–44.93, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Prostate cancer may be influenced by multiple glutathione transferase (GST) polymorphic genes, especially GSTP1, highlighting the role of gene–gene interactions in human susceptibility to this cancer. © 2020 by the authors.     Health-related quality of life, depression, and sexual function in testicular cancer survivors in a developing country: A Serbian experience

    Purpose: The aims of this study were to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL), depression, adverse physical symptoms, and sexual function within Serbian long-term testicular cancer survivors (TCS) and to address cultural specificity. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study involving 202 TCS, followed up after platinum-based chemotherapy. The HRQoL was measured using the Short Form 36 and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life questionnaire. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used to explore general depressive status while sexual function was assessed using a nine-item questionnaire. Results: The mean follow-up time since treatment was 47.3 ± 26.8 months. The highest values of the SF-36 scales were obtained for physical functioning, and the lowest SF-36 values were obtained for vitality. Age of patients and BDI scores statistically significantly influenced total quality of life. The mean score of the whole sample on the BDI-II was 4.0. Age is the only statistically significant risk factor for the development of depression. A total of 27.3 % TCS reported decreased sexual function compared to the period before treatment. Any level of impairment of erectile function was reported by 20.8 % patients and problems with ejaculation by 25.7 % patients. Loss of desire was reported by 17.3 % TCS. The presence of sexual problems statistically significantly lowered scores of SF-36 domains. Conclusion: Sexual problems seriously impaired HRQoL in TCS. Additionally, HRQoL was also affected by age, depression, and fatigue. Serbian TCS achieved high levels of SF-36 scores, and these results are comparable to studies conducted in developed countries. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

    Background and Objectives: Radical prostatectomy (RP) stands as the predominant instigator of postoperative stress urinary incontinence. Techniques such as the preservation of the neurovascular bundles, bladder neck preservation, and ensuring longer postoperative urethral length have shown positive impacts on continence. The posterior reconstruction is another method that aids in early continence recovery. Anterior suspension as simulator of puboprostatic ligaments is another factor. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in the Clinic of Urology, University Clinical Center of Serbia, between December 2014 and January 2020, employing a prospective, non-randomized comparative design. Data were meticulously gathered from 192 consecutive patients. The process of regaining continence was monitored at intervals of 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery. The main criterion for assessing the level of urinary continence was the number of pads used daily. Results: The distribution of overall continence rates in the BNP vs. no-BNP group at 3, 6 and 12 months was 86% vs. 60% (p < 0.0001), 89% vs. 67% (p < 0.0001), 93% vs. 83% (p = 0.022). Continence rates in non-posterior reconstruction group (10%, 22%, 34%, and 54% at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months) were statistically significantly lower (p < 0.0001). The patients who underwent urethral suspension exhibited significantly higher rates of overall continence at 1 mo (73% vs. 29%, p < 0.0001), 3 mo (85% vs. 53%, p < 0.001), 6 mo (89% vs. 62%, p < 0.0001), 12 mo (95% vs. 76%, p < 0.0001), and 24 mo (93% vs. 81%, p = 0.007). Patients who underwent urethral suspension had a four-fold greater likelihood of regaining continence (p = 0.015). Conclusions: Patients who underwent urethral suspension or BNP or posterior reconstruction had higher continence rates. Only the urethral suspension was found to be a significant prognostic factor of continence recovery. © 2024 by the authors.

    Sustained and dysregulated inflammation, concurrent tumor-induced immune suppression, and oxidative stress are profoundly involved in cancer initiation, presentation, and perpetuation. Within this prospective study, we simultaneously analyzed the preoperative indices of systemic inflammatory response and the representative byproducts of oxidative DNA, protein, and lipid damage with the aim of evaluating their clinical relevance among patients diagnosed with testicular germ-cell tumors (GCT). In the analytical cohort (n = 88, median age 34 years), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (dNLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were significantly altered in patients with a higher tumor stage (p < 0.05). Highly suggestive correlations were found between NLR, dNLR, and SII and modified nucleoside 8-OHdG. CRP and albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR) significantly correlated with thiols group level and maximal tumor dimension (p < 0.05). Based on receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses, all the evaluated pre-orchiectomy inflammation markers demonstrated strong performance in predicting metastatic disease; optimal cut-off points were determined for each indicator. Although further large-scale studies are warranted, inflammatory and redox indices may both complement the established tumor markers and standard clinicopathological prognostic variables and contribute to enhanced personalized risk-assessment among testicular GCT patients. © 2022 by the authors. Patients werefollowed-up every 3 to 4 months for the first year after surgery, every 6 months until the 5th year, and annually thereafter. Results: 286 patients were included in the study, and PN was performed in 177 (61.9%) of them, whereas RN was performed in the remaining 109 (38.1%). The median follow-up for the entire group was 42.0 months (interquartile range 74.5). There were no statistically significant differences between groups in cancer-specific survival (CSS) (log-rank=0.506; p=0.477). Patients selected for RN were more likely to be older, symptomatic at presentation, and have larger tumors. There was no statistically significant difference in OS between the two groups (log-rank=2.616; p=0.106). In 1996, 20% of the patients were treated with PN; this number increased to 88% in 2013. Conclusion: We did not find OS advantage for PN compared to RN in the setting of a developing country. The use of PN is increasing and is now utilized for -90% ofpTla renal tumors.

    Prognostic Impact of Preoperative Anemia on Urothelial and Extraurothelial Recurrence in Patients with Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma

    Background: To investigate the prognostic impact of preoperative anemia on urothelial and extraurothelial recurrence after radical nephroureterectomy. Methods: A single-center series of 238 consecutive patients who were treated with radical nephroureterectomy for upper tract urothelial carcinoma was evaluated. We categorized patients on the basis of hemoglobin level into 2 groups, including normal or anemia. Survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to evaluate the association of preoperative anemia with outcome, controlling for clinicopathologic variables. Results: Ninety-seven patients (40.8%) had anemia (median hemoglobin level, 143 vs. 107 g/L). Preoperative anemia was associated with history of bladder cancer (P =.01), tumor multifocality (P =.03), lymphovascular invasion (P =.05), and adjuvant chemotherapy (P =.01). Higher tumor stage and grade, and lymph node metastasis were significantly associated with preoperative anemia. Preoperative anemia was independently associated with extraurothelial recurrence (hazard ratio, 1.95; 95% confidence interval, 1.14-3.34; P =.01) in multivariate Cox regression analyses. Only a history of bladder tumor (hazard ratio, 2.07; P =.009) and tumor multifocality (hazard ratio, 3.97; 95% confidence interval, 2.37-6.67; P <.001) were independently associated with urothelial recurrence. The 5-year cancer-specific survival for patients with normal hemoglobin level was 82.1% and for patients with preoperative anemia was 54.2%. Conclusion: Patients with preoperative anemia had a greater probability of having upper tract urothelial carcinoma with higher tumor stages, higher tumor grades, and lymph node metastasis (pN+). Preoperative anemia was statistically significantly associated with worse cancer-specific survival and extraurothelial recurrence in patients who underwent radical nephroureterectomy. © 2015 Elsevier Inc.     Background: The aim of this work was to evaluate the prognostic potential of preoperative thrombocytosis for recurrence-free survival (RFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) among patients subjected to radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) due to UTUC. Patients and Methods: Analytical cohort was composed of a single-center series of 405 patients treated between January 1999 and December 2020. Thrombocytosis was defined as a platelet count exceeding the threshold value of 400 × 109 per L. Along with the Kaplan–Meier survival probability, Cox proportional hazard regression models were used. Results: Preoperative thrombocytosis confirmed in 71 patients (17.5%) was significantly associated with the higher pathological tumor stage, lymph node metastasis, prior bladder cancer diagnosis, and preoperative anemia. With a median post-surgical follow-up period of 33.5 months, 125 patients (30.9%) experienced disease recurrence. The recurrence rate among patients with normal platelet levels was 13.6%, compared with 22.2% in those with preoperative thrombocytosis (p < 0.03). The 5-year RFS estimates reached 36.6% in the thrombocytosis-confirmed group. Multivariate analysis implied that preoperative thrombocytosis was a significant independent prognosticator of both poor RFS (HR 2.22, 95% CI 1.14–4.31, p = 0.02) and CSS (HR 2.48, 95% CI 1.14–3.09, p = 0.01). Conclusions: Patients with a clinically significant elevation of platelet count prior to RNU were more likely to have UTUC with advanced tumor stages and lymph node metastases. Preoperative thrombocytosis was an independent predictor of RFS and CSS in patients who underwent radical nephroureterectomy. Furthermore, preoperative thrombocytosis may complement and refine UTUC clinical prediction algorithms as an independent indicator of adverse survival outcomes. © Society of Surgical Oncology 2024.

    Objective: To evaluate the prognostic factors for survival and disease recurrence in patients treated surgically for upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC), focusing especially on the impact of history of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Patients and methods: A single-center series of 221 consecutive patients who were treated surgically for UTUC between January 1999 and December 2010 was evaluated. Patients who had a history of bladder tumor at a higher stage than the upper tract disease, preoperative chemotherapy, or previous contralateral UTUC were excluded. None of the patients included in this study had distant metastasis at diagnosis of UTUC. In total, 183 patients (mean age 66 years, range 36-88) were then available for evaluation. Tumor multifocality was defined as the synchronous presence of 2 or more pathologically confirmed tumors in any upper urinary tract location (renal pelvis or ureter). All patients were treated with either open radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) or open conservative surgery. Recurrence-free probabilities and cancer-specific survival were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression analyses. Results: Fifty-one patients (28%) had previous carcinoma not invading bladder muscle. Previous history of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer was significantly associated with tumor multifocality (P < 0.001), concomitant bladder cancer (P < 0.001), higher tumor stage (P = 0.020), and lymphovascular invasion (P = 0.026). Using univariate analyses, history of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer was significantly associated with an increased risk of both any recurrence (HR = 2.17; P = 0.003) and bladder-only recurrence (HR = 3.17; P = 0.001). Previous carcinoma not invading bladder muscle (HR = 2.58; P = 0.042) was an independent predictor of bladder-only recurrence. Overall 5-year disease recurrence-free (any recurrence and bladder-only recurrence) survival rates were 66.7% and 77%, respectively. Previous history of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer was not associated with cancer-specific survival. Our results are subject to the inherent biases associated with high-volume tertiary care centers. Conclusions: Patients with previous history of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer had a higher risk of having multifocal and UTUC with higher tumor stages (pT3 or greater). History of bladder tumor was an independent predictor of bladder cancer recurrence but had no effect on non-bladder recurrence, and cancer-specific survival in patients who underwent surgical treatment of UTUC. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.

However, tumor multifocality was not associated with CSS (HR, 1.29; 95% CI, 0.89 – 1.96; P = 0.21) in univariate Cox regression analyses. Tumor stage (HR, 11.1; 95% CI, 3.64 – 33.8; P < 0.001), lymph node status (HR, 2.04, 95% CI, 1.05 – 3.94; P = 0.03) and preoperative anemia (HR, 3.50, 95% CI, 2.02 – 6.08; P < 0.001) were the only independent predictors associated with worse cancer-specific survival.     Background: To identify the prognostic impact of residence in a BEN-endemic area and gender on upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) outcomes in Serbian patients treated with radical nephroureterectomy (RNU). Methods: The study included 334 consecutive patients with UTUC. Patients with permanent residence in Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) or non-endemic areas from their birth to the end of follow-up were included in the analysis. Cox regression analyses were used to address recurrence-free (RFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) estimates. Results: Female patients were more likely to have preoperative pyuria (P = 0.01), tumor multifocality was significantly associated with the female gender (P = 0.003). Gender was not associated with pathologic stage and grade, lymph node metastasis, lymphovascular invasion, adjuvant chemotherapy, bladder cancer history, tumor size, distribution of tumor location, preoperative anemia and demographic characteristics. A total of 107 cases recurred, with a median time to bladder recurrence of 24.5 months. History of bladder tumor (HR, 1.98; P = 0.005), tumor multifocality (HR, 3.80; P < 0.001) and residence in a BEN-endemic area (HR, 1.81; P = 0.01) were independently associated with bladder cancer recurrence. The 5-year bladder cancer RFS for the patients from areas of BEN was 77.8 % and for the patients from non-BEN areas was 64.7 %. The 5-year CSS for the men was 66.2% when compared to 66.6% for the women (P = 0.55). Conclusions: Residence in a BEN-endemic area represents an independent predictor of bladder cancer recurrence in patients who underwent RNU. Gender cannot be used to predict outcomes in a single-centre series of consecutive patients who were treated with RNU for UTUC. © 2021 Elsevier Inc.

    Objective: We aimed to assess the prognostic value of De Ritis ratio on oncological outcomes in patients suffering from urothelial bladder cancer and undergoing radical cystectomy (RC). Patients and Methods: Analytical cohort comprised a single-center series of 367 patients treated between January 2015 and December 2018. Patients were classified into two groups based on De Ritis ratio (<1.3 [normal] vs. ≥1.3 [high]). Along with the Kaplan-Meier survival probability, cox proportional hazard regression models were used. Results: A total of 299 patients were included, 60.5% of them having a De Ritis ratio of <1.3% and 39.5% with a De Ritis ratio of ≥1.3. Preoperative increased De Ritis ratio was associated with age (p = 0.001), gender (p = 0.044), cancer-related death (p = 0.001), overall death (p = 0.001), and tumor stage (p = 0.001). Multivariate analysis implied that preoperative De Ritis ratio was a significant independent prognosticator of overall survival (HR 0.461; 95% CI 0.335–0.633; p < 0.001) and CSS (HR 0.454; 95% CI 0.330–0.623; p < 0.001). Only tumor stage (HR 1.953; 95% CI 1. 106–3.448; p = 0.021) was independently associated with recurrence-free survival (RFS). De Ritis ratio was not independently associated with RFS in multivariate analyses. During the follow up, a total of 198 (66.2%) patients died, including 173 (57.9%) from BC, 5-year CSS was 45.8%. Conclusions: De Ritis ratio is an independent prognostic factor of cancer specific and overall survival in patients treated with RC for urothelial BC. RC patients may benefit from the use of the De Ritis ratio as a valid predictive biomarker. © 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.
